Sony’s FX5 cinema camera is finally getting real ship dates. This week Sony Japan set a November 20 on-sale date, Sony Korea launched the camera on October 30, and U.S. dealers including B&H and Adorama are now showing mid-November availability, according to Sony’s regional announcements, RedShark News and dealer listings. The FX5 was announced back in July and missed its original August window, so a lot of video shooters have been waiting on this one.
Here at Grey Bug Photography we shoot events and headshots on Nikon Z9 and Z8 bodies, so we’re not switching systems. But the FX5 is a good snapshot of where event video is heading, and a couple of its headline features solve problems our San Antonio clients run into every week.
Sony FX5 at a glance
- Sensor: a new 16.6MP stacked full-frame sensor with 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, per Sony.
- Open gate: the first FX-series camera to record the full 3:2 sensor area, which makes it easier to cut both horizontal and vertical versions from one clip.
- Internal raw: 16-bit X-OCN raw recorded in-camera, plus smaller X-OCN C1 and C2 options, so no external recorder is needed.
- Frame rates: 5K up to 60 fps, 4K up to 120 fps and Full HD up to 240 fps.
- Low light: three base ISOs (800, 4000 and 12800) and a Dual Gain mode aimed at cleaner shadows.
- Audio and accessories: an optional XLR handle with 32-bit float recording, a detachable OLED viewfinder and a timecode cable.
Price and ship dates
Sony’s U.S. suggested price is $4,899.99 for the body and $5,499.99 with the XLR handle. Japan’s on-sale date is November 20, U.S. dealers list mid-November, and Sony’s UK and European sites point to January 8. Sony hasn’t announced an official U.S. date, so treat dealer estimates as estimates and don’t book a paid shoot around a camera you don’t have in hand yet.
Why open gate matters for event video
Almost every business event we cover now needs two versions of the same moment: a horizontal clip for a website or recap video, and a vertical clip for Instagram Reels, TikTok or LinkedIn. Open gate records the taller 3:2 frame, giving an editor room to crop a clean 16:9 or 9:16 version without reshooting. For conferences, summits and networking nights, that means one camera operator can feed both the recap and social media from the same footage.
Why low-light performance matters
Look at the photo above. Event rooms in San Antonio and across Texas often mix warm pendant lights, colored LED uplighting and window light, and they rarely get bright. Multiple base ISOs and dual-gain readout are designed to keep noise down in exactly these rooms. Whatever camera your video team uses, ask how it handles dim, mixed light before the event, not after.
Takeaways for San Antonio event and business clients
- Plan for vertical from the start: tell your photo or video team you need social clips so they can frame for both formats.
- Ask about audio: clean speaker audio matters as much as the picture. XLR inputs or a dedicated recorder make a big difference at panels and keynotes.
- Raw video is now common: our Nikon Z9 and Z8 already record internal raw video, and the FX5 brings that to Sony’s compact cinema line. Raw gives editors more room to fix tricky venue color.
- New gear isn’t the whole story: lighting, positioning and a clear shot list still decide how good your event coverage looks.

Our take
The FX5 isn’t a camera most event clients will ever think about, but the features it brings, open gate framing, internal raw and strong low-light performance, are exactly what make event video faster to turn into website and social content.
