Nikon has given photographers an early look at its holiday deals, and the headline is that the Nikon Z8 just got another $100 off. According to a November 3 report from Nikon Rumors, the Z8 body is now listed at $1,100 off, up from $1,000 off last month, and the rest of the lineup looks unchanged. The site also notes it is not certain these will be the final Black Friday offers, so treat this as a sneak peek and not a promise. Since Grey Bug Photography has shot events and headshots with the Nikon Z9 and Z8 since they launched, here is how we would think about it.
What the sneak peek shows
- Nikon Z8 body: $1,100 off (was $1,000 off).
- Nikon Z9 body: $1,100 off, unchanged.
- Nikon Z7 II body: $800 off. Nikon Z6 III body: $700 off. Nikon Z5 body: $450 off.
- Nikon Z30 with the 16-50mm lens: $350 off.
- Lenses: the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is $200 off, the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is $800 off, the Z 50mm f/1.8 S is $200 off and the Z 400mm f/2.8 TC is $2,000 off.
In the US, the report lists B&H Photo, Paul’s Photo and Service Photo as the participating retailers. Prices and dates can change, so always confirm the final price and terms with the seller before you buy.
Z8 or Z9 for event and headshot work?
With the same discount on both bodies, the choice comes down to how you shoot. From our own use of both, these are the practical differences that matter on a job:
- The Z8 is the lighter, easier carry. If you are on your feet for a long conference or walking a trade show floor, the smaller body adds up over a full day.
- The Z9 has the bigger, built-in-grip body. Many shooters like the extra battery capacity and the handling for long days and vertical shooting, and it feels at home on a busy event.
- Both deliver the same kind of image quality. For headshots and event coverage, you will not be held back by either one. Lenses, lighting and technique make a bigger difference than the choice between the two.
The photo above is a good example of why a pro body is worth it. A bright window next to a white dress is a lot for any sensor to handle, and that frame came off a Nikon Z9 with detail kept in both the bright sky and the lace. The same dynamic range helps in a dim ballroom with a bright stage screen.
A few smart ways to use a holiday sale
- Buy for a job you already have, not a deal you saw. A discount only saves money if you needed the gear in the first place.
- Consider a lens before a body. A $200 rebate on a 24-70mm f/2.8 can improve your work more than a new camera, especially for events and headshots.
- Buy early enough to test. Run a new body through a practice shoot before you bring it to a paid event.
- Keep a second body as a backup. Every event we cover has one in the bag, and a sale is a good time to add a proven backup.
If you want to compare these cameras while you decide, you can see the Nikon Z8 at Adorama or see the Nikon Z9 at Adorama. Keep in mind that Nikon’s holiday deals are listed through the retailers named in the report above, so check those listings for the sale pricing.

What this means if you are hiring a photographer
If you are a San Antonio event planner or you are booking team headshots, you do not need to follow camera deals, but it is a good reminder to ask what your photographer shoots with. Look for professional bodies with dual card slots, a backup camera on site and experience in your lighting, whether that is a bright outdoor stage or a dim ballroom.
Gear is only part of the picture. If you are shopping for backup and supply questions, our recent post on camera shortages in 2026 covers what to plan for, and our guide to the Sigma FP2 looks at another body from an event photographer’s view.
The bottom line
Nikon’s sneak peek puts the Z8 and Z9 at the same $1,100 discount, which makes this a good moment to compare them if you have a real need. Check the final offer with an authorized retailer before you buy.
